About Baytown

Baytown as it exists today was founded on 24 January 1948, when three separate towns — Goose Creek, Pelly and East Baytown — merged and their residents settled on one name for the combined city. Goose Creek was named for the bayou where Canada geese wintered; Pelly and East Baytown grew as boomtowns after the Goose Creek Oil Field was found. In 1916 the Humble Oil and Refining Company, founded by the future Texas governor Ross S. Sterling and his associates, drilled the first offshore well in Texas here and later built the Baytown Refinery. The ExxonMobil complex that grew out of it dates to 1919, and petroleum and petrochemical processing still anchor the local economy.
