Bellaire

Bellaire was founded in 1908 by William Wright Baldwin, president of the South End Land Company and a Burlington Railroad vice-president, on part of William Marsh Rice's 9,449-acre ranch; Baldwin surveyed the eastern 1,000 acres into small truck farms he called Westmoreland Farms. He said the name meant "good air", for the breezes, and it may also nod to Bellaire, Ohio, a town on one of his rail lines. A four-mile streetcar line nicknamed the Toonerville Trolley connected it to Houston's Main Street from 1910 until buses replaced it in 1927. Bellaire incorporated on 24 June 1918, which is why Houston — annexing all the unincorporated land around it by the end of 1948 — could never absorb it. The I-610 Loop was cut through in the 1960s, taking about 250 houses with it.
