Clear Lake

Clear Lake City is a master-planned community in southeast Harris County, not an independent city: most of it lies inside Houston's limits, with a small eastern portion in Taylor Lake Village. The land was the ranch of businessman James Marion West, whose home stood on the shores of Clear Lake and Clear Creek; Humble Oil bought it in 1938 after oil was found. It stayed largely undeveloped until the Johnson Space Center was sited nearby, at which point Humble's Friendswood Development Company planned the residential community and set up the Clear Lake City Community Association in 1963. Houston annexed the extraterritorial portion in 1977 over local objection, adding 3,174 acres. The name comes from Clear Lake itself, effectively the mouth of Clear Creek where it meets Galveston Bay.
