Conroe takes its name from Isaac Conroe, a Union cavalry officer turned Houston lumberman who set up a sawmill here in 1881; the settlement was first called Conroe's Switch. Lumber cut from the surrounding piney woods built the early economy, and the town incorporated in 1904. In 1931 George W. Strake discovered the Conroe Oil Field, and through the 1930s the oil money ran deep enough that the city was said to have more millionaires per capita than any other in the country. Lake Conroe was created by a dam in 1973 as an alternative water supply for Houston, and its 19,640 acres have drawn boats and fishing ever since.
