About Downtown
Downtown holds Houston's original townsite, at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou — the point known as Allen's Landing — and has been the city's main commercial district since its founding in 1836. John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman Allen bought 6,642 acres and settled there; surveyors platted a 62-square-block townsite that autumn, angling the grid to follow the bayou. That grid is still legible today across roughly 400 blocks running southwest to northeast, inside a 1,178-acre area bounded by I-45, I-69/US-59 and I-10/US-90. An extensive tunnel and skywalk network links many of the buildings underground.
