EaDo

EaDo sits east of Downtown and north of the I-45 Gulf Freeway, between the George R. Brown Convention Center and the East End. It contains Houston's Old Chinatown — bounded by I-69/US-59, Preston Street, St. Joseph Parkway and Emancipation Avenue — the older of the city's two Chinatowns, settled in the 1930s by Cantonese immigrants who moved out from Downtown looking for cheaper land and opened grocery stores and restaurants. The name is newer than the district: "EaDo", short for East Downtown, was chosen in 2008 through a public naming campaign run by the East Downtown Management District. The built character is still low warehouses, some in industrial use, with the convention centre and the Downtown skyline behind them.
