About Galleria / Uptown
Uptown — almost always called the Galleria area — is a business district about 6.2 miles west of Downtown, centred on Post Oak Boulevard and Westheimer Road, covering roughly 1,010 acres bounded by Woodway Drive on the north, I-610 on the east and Yorktown Street on the west. In 1948 it was open land three miles outside the city limits; it urbanised after Gerald D. Hines and others began developing it in the 1960s. The Galleria opened on 16 November 1970, modelled on Milan's Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II down to the glazed barrel-vault skylight, over an indoor ice rink. Philip Johnson's 901-foot Williams Tower, the Transco Tower until 1999, anchors the district.
