About Katy
Katy began as a railroad stop: when the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad dropped its Missouri waypoint, the junction became known as the KT stop, and the town took the name Katy in January 1896. Before that the area was called Cane Island, after the cane-filled creek running off Buffalo Bayou. Cotton, peanuts and corn were the first successful crops, but rice became the commodity crop here — the first concrete rice driers in Texas were built in 1944 and still stand. The city incorporated in 1945, and sits roughly where Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties meet.
