League City

League City sits mainly in Galveston County, with a small portion north of Clear Creek falling in Harris County, about 23 miles southeast of Houston and the same distance northwest of Galveston. It was settled at the former site of a Karankawa village; the first resident of the town proper, George W. Butler, arrived from Louisiana in 1854 and settled where Clear Creek meets Chigger Bayou. The area was called Butler's Ranch, or Clear Creek, until J. C. League acquired the land and won the naming argument with postmaster Butler. The Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad came through in 1859. In 1907 League left two railroad flatcars of live oak saplings for residents to plant; those Butler Oaks still line Main Street. The city incorporated in 1962.
