Montrose

Montrose — also called Neartown — sits in west-central Houston and is named after Montrose in Angus, Scotland. It was first platted in 1911 as a planned community and streetcar suburb, before River Oaks was developed. Developer J. W. Link laid out four wide boulevards with heavy landscaping, and the built fabric is still renovated mansions, wide-porched bungalows and cottages on tree-lined streets. Link's own house, the Link-Lee Mansion, is now part of the University of St. Thomas campus. The Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel, both created by John and Dominique de Menil, are a block apart here.
