About Rice Military
Rice Military is bounded by Washington Avenue on the north, Buffalo Bayou on the south, Shepherd Drive on the east and Westcott Street on the west. The "Military" comes from Camp Logan, the World War I army training camp next door that was replaced by Memorial Park after the war; the "Rice" comes from the family that owned the land, including William Marsh Rice, whose fortune founded Rice University. The original housing was small bungalows and shotgun houses on tree-lined streets, and because there were no use restrictions, townhouses and condominiums later grew up beside them. The Beer Can House is here, as is the Brunner-Harmonium Historic District — eight houses on and around Blossom Street, most built between 1905 and 1915.
