About Spring Branch
Spring Branch is a district in west-northwest Harris County lying almost entirely inside Houston, roughly bordered by Tanner and Hempstead roads on the north, Beltway 8 on the west, I-10 on the south and the 610 Loop on the east. It is named for Spring Branch, one of several small bayous crossing it along with Brickhouse Gully and Briar Branch, all draining into Buffalo Bayou. It began in the 1800s as a religious German farming settlement, many of its farmers running dairies; Karl Kolbe, who arrived from Germany in 1830, was the earliest settler. St. Peter's United Church opened in 1848, and the school society it sponsored in 1856 became Spring Branch ISD. Houston annexed the east in the 1940s and the west in the 1950s.
