About Sugar Land

Sugar Land grew up around sugar. The land sits in the floodplain of the Brazos River and was worked through the 19th century as the Oakland Plantation; in 1879 Colonel E. H. Cunningham platted a town around his sugar refinery and drew settlers to it. The Imperial Sugar Company was formed in 1908 when the partnership acquired the Cunningham plantation along with its raw-sugar mill and cane-sugar refinery, and Sugar Land grew steadily as a company town around it. It incorporated as a city in 1959, and the Imperial crown is still on the city seal.
