The Heights

The Heights was laid out around 1891 by Oscar Martin Carter's Omaha and South Texas Land Company, which bought 1,756 acres and put in the streets, parks, schools and utilities itself — one of Texas's earliest planned communities, and a streetcar suburb. The site was picked partly for its elevation: roughly 23 feet above Houston, which at the time was dealing with yellow fever and other waterborne illness. It ran its own municipality from July 1896 until it agreed to be annexed by Houston in 1919, and the 1912 alcohol ban it carried into that agreement was not fully unwound until 2016–17. Heights Boulevard still holds the original character in its older houses and large trees.
