The Woodlands
Wooded and walkable around the Waterway; skews pricier than the rest of the metro.

About The Woodlands
The Woodlands was dedicated by George P. Mitchell in 1974, after the oil investor attended a symposium on building new towns under the federal HUD Title VII program. The land had been the Grogan-Cochran Lumber Mill, which is why two of the villages are named Grogan's Mill and Cochran's Crossing. It was laid out as eight villages, each with its own parks, hike and bike trails and commercial center, and much of the forest was deliberately left standing for shade. The Woodlands is not an incorporated city but a special-purpose district and census-designated place, mostly in Montgomery County, about 28 miles up Interstate 45 from Houston.
