Westheimer Corridor

Westheimer Road runs about 19 miles east to west, from Bagby Street Downtown out to the Westpark Tollway at the southern edge of George Bush Park. It is named for Mitchell Louis Westheimer, a German Jewish immigrant and flour salesman who settled in Houston in 1859 and bought a 640-acre farm west of the then city limits, where Lamar High School and St. John's School now stand. He built a school on it for his sixteen children and invited the neighbours' in; the route out there was known as "the road to Westheimer's place". In 1895 he let Harris County build a right of way from Houston toward Columbus and Sealy, and that road became Westheimer. West of I-610 it is also Farm to Market Road 1093.
